Delete your NearbyPlay account
How to delete your account in the app
The fastest way to delete your account is directly from the NearbyPlay mobile app:
- Open the NearbyPlay mobile app on your Android or iOS device
- Tap the Profile tab (bottom-right)
- Under the Settings section
- Scroll down and tap Delete Account
- (Optional) Provide a reason for deletion. This helps us improve the product
- Confirm the deletion. Your account moves into a 45-day grace period.
The 45-day grace period
When you initiate deletion, your account is immediately marked for deletion but data is not yet erased. During the 45-day grace period:
- You are signed out from all devices
- Your profile is hidden from other users
- You will not receive any notifications, SMS, or WhatsApp messages from NearbyPlay
- You cannot create or join games
- You can cancel deletion at any time by signing back into the app with your phone number. Your account is fully restored
If you are a sole community owner or admin
If you are the only owner or admin of one or more communities, deletion requires an additional step. During the grace period, you may be prompted to transfer community ownership to another member. If no transfer is completed:
- Communities you solely own may be deactivated when your account is deleted
- Members of those communities will be notified that the community is no longer active
- You may proceed with deletion even if ownership transfer is incomplete; the community will be deactivated
What gets permanently deleted
At the end of the grace period, the following are permanently removed:
- Your name, display name, profile picture, and contact details (phone number, email)
- Your sport preferences, skill levels, and notification settings
- Your community memberships and saved locations
- Your push notification tokens (your device stops receiving NearbyPlay notifications)
- Direct messages and conversations through our WhatsApp bot
- Your game participation history, except where retention is required by law (see below)
What is retained (and why)
Indian law and platform-security needs require some limited retention even after account deletion:
- Game activity records: Retained for a minimum of one year in accordance with the DPDP Rules, 2025, in anonymised form. This supports breach detection and investigation.
- Audit logs: System logs that record the deletion event are retained for 180 days as required under applicable directions. These logs do not contain personal data about your gameplay or communications.
- Legal and tax records: If you were involved in any transaction, dispute, or report subject to legal retention requirements, related records may be retained for the duration prescribed by applicable law.
- Aggregated analytics: Anonymised, aggregated usage statistics (e.g., how many games happened in a city in a month) do not personally identify you and are retained indefinitely.
Alternative deletion methods
If you cannot access the mobile app (lost device, uninstalled, etc.), you may request account deletion by email:
- Email contact@nearbyplay.in from the email address associated with your account (if any)
- Include the phone number registered with your account
- State that you are requesting permanent account deletion
- We will verify your identity (typically by sending an OTP to your registered phone number) before proceeding
- The 45-day grace period still applies; we will confirm the start date with you by email
